COTTAGE EXTENSION : Peak District National Park

Bringing the Hills into the House

The property lies within a conservation area; half the dwelling is an old cottage and the rest a 30 year old extension which extended it into a three bed house. The character of the cottage is snug and introverted and there was no connection with a large south facing deck which looks out to the hills.

The idea was to create a light, extrovert space with large windows connecting to the outdoor space and the wonderful view. The extension is built into the steeply sloping site and fills the yard. This new space becomes the kitchen/ dining room and links a stone storeroom into the house for use as a home study. The old kitchen is redesigned to give a generous hall, shower and utility spaces.
