HEELEY BANK SCHOOL : Sheffield
Unsafe Building Sees Artists Evicted
We were commissioned to examine the feasibility of this former board school (Grade 2 listed) as a community facility with arts and creative industries as its core tenants.
Artists have used the school as their studios since it was closed in the 1980s. They were forced to move out on the grounds of heath and safety and our study aimed to establish a phased plan for reuse, starting with detailed proposals to make the building safe, accessible and useable for local people. Later phases included the improvement of playgrounds with landscaping and prefabricated buildings.
The school remains empty and at risk, however our study has produced a fully costed plan which is ready when a suitable funding stream becomes available.
